Container Garden Secrets
Gardening has many benefits. It is good for the soul, it provides exercise, and it is a hobby that will give you flowers for your home and vegetables for your kitchen. However, not everyone can enjoy a good space for gardening. If you live in an apartment or a home where you do not have a garden you can still do some gardening and reap all the benefits.
You can start a container garden. Gardening in containers will be the perfect solution to your space problem. By creating a garden in containers, you will be able to beautify your space and grow vegetables to prepare delicious cuisine. You can utilize small or large pots; put them in a section of your backyard or patio, around the house, on a windowsill, and even in a section of your balcony. You can also hang them around. You have many choices with a container garden.
There are some advantages to gardening in containers. You can move them around; you can control the soil and plantings, better. You will have more control over weeds and pests too. Easy watering is also an advantage of a container garden. You can water with a watering can or you can buy an automatic watering gadget, such as the decorative crystal balls that you stick in the soil. They look beautiful while doing the job.
If you have an inside container garden, you just have to mind the light source for the type of plant that you are growing. Consider this when moving interior plants around. You should match the light source as best as you can so the plant does not go into shock. You can make a beautiful arrangement of plants that will compliment your décor by using different pots in many styles, colors, sizes, and texture.
There are some issues to consider when gardening in a container. You will have to learn to aerate the soil, since the plant is confined to a small space. You will also learn to adjust the amount of water that the plant needs, so you do not overwater or underwater it. If you overwater a plant, it will get saggy and will rot. Underwatering will make it dry and the plant will start looking sick.
Some containers retain moisture better than others do. Plastic containers work better than the drier containers made out of clay or cement. Another thing to consider is the size of the plant. Match the container to the size. A large plant should have enough room for it to grow comfortable. When plants outgrow their containers, it is time to move them to a larger container. You will know this by looking at the bottom of the container, some roots will be out, and you will see more plant (roots) than soil in the pot. The plant will start looking tired and not as healthy as before.
Another consideration is to provide vitamins to the plant, since the soil can give only so much in a container. You can use liquid, powder, or pellet and stick vitamins – whatever works for your gardening style better. Some people like the sticks because they will introduce them in the soil and forget about it. There are many types of prepared soil in the market. Some have fertilizers added and others are for specific types of plants. Research these before planting.
Just because you do not have a big yard or space for a garden does not mean that you will not be able to garden. Start planning your container garden and have fun with it.
